Agreed. That was America’s virtue (and, duh: entire premise). My big takeaway from elementary through high school social studies (and Sunday School, too!) was that America is a melting pot.
And it could be one of the secrets of this country's success. Not everybody has the gumption to pull up stakes and go somewhere alien where you may not know the language and your skills may not translate.
Useful traits to emigrate are: optimism, energy, belief in oneself, willingness to work, and able to take the long view (many people come here, not for themselves, but their children).

It was never a melting pot, although that was the term that was coined for the textbooks. I remember reading an article geared for children when I was about 9, that stated it would be more accurate to characterize the US as a salad bowl—all different peoples living side-by-side in relative harmony, but maintaining their individual cultural identities. That made a lot of sense to me. And even though there are now more interracial and cross-cultural marriages than there were in the past, the different cultures tend to remain distinct. Not entirely, of course, as cultural borrowing does happen on a consistent basis.
And that borrowing is a source of growth and innovation. Our music is a history of borrowing from sources like Africa, gospel, folk (England), and lots more.
I believe that every culture brings with it a unique way of looking at things. All of these different perspectives give us a more complete and sharper view of the issues we face.
The world is becoming too complex for individuals. Even science is now done mostly by teams. If you want to build a great team where everybody has something to contribute, this is the ideal place to do that!

But Biden certainly did not allow any “invasion” at our southern border, and immigrants as a class are generally more law-abiding and less prone to violent crimes bc they know that committing a violent crime is a sure way to get turfed out of our country. Just look up “national statistics on violent crimes committed by immigrants” and you will see that US citizens commit violent crimes at a far higher rate than immigrants do. Do you know what is higher though? It’s the incidence at which citizenship/immigration status is mentioned in press reporting of a violent crime. I personally have never seen an article in US papers that specifically said the perpetrator of a violent was a US citizen. Instead, they will say the person was a resident of (city,state), and leave it at that. When the person committing the crime is not a citizen, however, their status as an immigrant is frequently included in the article. Similarly, when the perpetrator is white, it is almost never deemed worthy of mention, but when they are black, it always seems to creep into the reporting. Our own media is conditioning us to believe things that are not necessarily true, just by the way they report on the issues. If you really believe Biden allowed an “invasion” at our southern border, you ought to be able to back up your assertion with official numbers from his administration. Oh, and btw, Trump’s interference in Venezuela is likely to lead to even more immigrants attempting to come here from there in the future, because his actions were intended to cause—and are causing—more destabilization in that country, and people tend to flee from unstable countries to protect their lives.
I am not talking about immigrants in general. I saw with my own eyes. I have dear friends in TX and AZ. I go to NYC. Are you disputing that millions were crossing the border under the Biden adm?? Used to be harder to tell prior to obamacare and mandated electronic medical records. And guess what? They got free surgery—something not afforded to citizens. As for Venezuela, everyone who could escape did as their economy hit rock bottom. I was pretty tight with some Venezuelans in the 70s. They came from affluence but they all had food stamps vouchers and fake SS numbers that they purchased in PR on their way to the states. That is a fact too. They thought i was crazy to struggle as a student. But of course i didn’t qualify and i wouldn’t get a fake ID. Generally Venezuelans are wonderful people. I am all for legal immigration with proper vetting.

I'm not against Hispanics or immigration, I just insist that they come here legally, and that we have the right to determine who is allowed to stay. No country has to accept illegal immigrants. To think otherwise is to say they have a right to come here and we have no righs at all. I reject that position.
How about increasing the number of immigration judges and courts to actually determine who is here legally and who is trying to game the system? Can we agree on that approach Larry? By increasing the numbers of judges and lawyers working on these cases we can speed up the process from months to weeks and not need to run soviet style gulags in Florida. As a matter of fact, Larry, I would be happy if more of my taxes went to paying magistrate judges to adjudicate asylum claims, rather than lining the pockets of Musk, Thiel, et al through multimillion dollar defense contracts. I also have a law degree, and practiced for a few years in the nonprofit sector(which pays even less than government jobs), and I would happily come out of retirement to take that job—as long as I didn’t have to relocate to a border state.
We pay to keep them housed in detention in deplorable conditions and served barely edible food. If cost to get them their constitutional day in court is so prohibitive, then we should stop that for US citizens as well. That way everyone is treated exactly the same. See how ridiculous that is? If given their proper day in court, they would be processed more efficiently. But to keep detaining them for MONTHS on end before finally saying OK we are ready to send you out, thats a ton of money being spent for no reason. And there's a reason the higher ups are OK with THAT expense. Its a for profit system that they all own stock in. So every day, week, month that they keep these people detained they get richer. If it was really about speedy deportation, they wouldnt be holding them that long. They'd stamp the paper and send them out. But they arent doing that. Not to mention all the US citizens theyve grabbed with their tactics. I cant wait for their lawsuits. Especially the one where they raided a wrong address and froze their bank accounts, seized their cars, took all their phones and computers. Then turned around and said sorry about that you can apply to get all these things back and it will take at least a month but could take up to a year. Family with children unable to get to work or feed themselves with everything in their lives seized. We are spending MORE money doing things the wrong way and more to come as each of the lawsuits settle.

Actually, they do have an unconditional right to cross our borders at any point to seek asylum. Our immigration law was written that way back after WWII, bc the Congress at that time came to a bipartisan agreement that this country did not want to be the proximate cause of a genocide by refusing to allow ppl who were being tortured and killed in their homeland the opportunity to find a safe place to live. That part of the immigration code had never been amended. So anyone coming here to seek asylum, by definition has legal status until their case is heard and decided, even if they have no documentation.

Income tax is not the only tax. Sales tax, for instance, is not an income tax. Do migrants buy things? Do they spend money? Do they pay for tolls or parking?

The problem is that there are not enough legal avenues to immigrate, and yet the country—whether we like it or not—needs immigrants. The system, as it exists today, is governed by outdated and inadequate law; it is inefficient, insufficient, and inflexible.
My intent here is not to explain why in a few characters. That would be impossible—and that, in itself, is part of the problem. Immigration is difficult to explain to voters without making them feel cheated or misled. Most politicians simply play with the issue. Some don’t even understand it. It’s easier to fall back on demagogic phrases—easy to repeat, easy to recycle—memes, soundbites, graphic art, you name it.
Add to that the fact that immigration has always been, and remains, an emotionally charged topic in America, as it is almost everywhere in the world. Addressing it in a serious, structural way is extraordinarily difficult unless the timing is right—meaning most people feel economically secure and public safety is not a dominant concern.
Only then can a popular leader, with favorable political conditions, push for meaningful immigration reform. And even then, my bet is that reform would have to come piece by piece, not all at once.
What I love most about America is that I can go down the street and have my choice of tacos, Chinese food, Ethiopian food, Cajun, Italian, German, etc. Any kind of food, music, textiles, wood carving, glass blown objects, weaving, etc. Our immigrants make us the most interesting place to live. I live 30 miles north of the border in AZ. There are large stretches in AZ where the border wall does not exist. Migrants from all over the world can cross freely and ask for asylum and border patrol agents regularly pick them up and bring them to Tucson.

Most of these numbers are factoids that might be fun to use during bar room chitchat. Where is the Policy-relevant data, such as trends in innovative design & manufacture, workforce readiness for good paying jobs, quality of life for people over 85, and the like? I’d prefer evidence about the long term viability of the policy ideas underlying Biden’s big bills.
It is certainly obvious that he was trying to achieve those goals. Upgrading infrastructure and preparing for a future that will be dominated by global warming are certainly excellent goals.

We ought to be judging the Biden Presidency with data that validates - rejects - modified the models and the specific interventions that were bundled into the bills. And I include in my data wishlist the Biden team’s models & interventions aimed at optimizing Congressional action and stakeholder support.

Team Trump is using a different model. We should have up to four years worth of data that can help us understand whether the Team Biden models are viable. The complete replacement of one understanding of how the world works with an alternate understanding does not mean that no evidence can be collected, analyzed, and reported.

Consider that the larger Team Trump’s actions are consistent with the “Tech Bros each with their own city state” theory. Oligarchy. Contracts mean what the more powerful participant says they mean. It was never a melting pot, although that was the term that was coined for the textbooks. I remember reading an article geared for children when I was about 9, that stated it would be more accurate to characterize the US as a salad bowl—all different peoples living side-by-side in relative harmony, but maintaining their individual cultural identities. That made a lot of sense to me. And even though there are now more interracial and cross-cultural marriages than there were in the past, the different cultures tend to remain distinct. Not entirely, of course, as cultural borrowing does happen on a consistent basis.
And that borrowing is a source of growth and innovation. Our music is a history of borrowing from sources like Africa, gospel, folk (England), and lots more.
I believe that every culture brings with it a unique way of looking at things. All of these different perspectives give us a more complete and sharper view of the issues we face.
The world is becoming too complex for individuals. Even science is now done mostly by teams. If you want to build a great team where everybody has something to contribute, this is the ideal place to do that!

But Biden certainly did not allow any “invasion” at our southern border, and immigrants as a class are generally more law-abiding and less prone to violent crimes bc they know that committing a violent crime is a sure way to get turfed out of our country. Just look up “national statistics on violent crimes committed by immigrants” and you will see that US citizens commit violent crimes at a far higher rate than immigrants do. Do you know what is higher though? It’s the incidence at which citizenship/immigration status is mentioned in press reporting of a violent crime. I personally have never seen an article in US papers that specifically said the perpetrator of a violent was a US citizen. Instead, they will say the person was a resident of (city,state), and leave it at that. When the person committing the crime is not a citizen, however, their status as an immigrant is frequently included in the article. Similarly, when the perpetrator is white, it is almost never deemed worthy of mention, but when they are black, it always seems to creep into the reporting. Our own media is conditioning us to believe things that are not necessarily true, just by the way they report on the issues. If you really believe Biden allowed an “invasion” at our southern border, you ought to be able to back up your assertion with official numbers from his administration. Oh, and btw, Trump’s interference in Venezuela is likely to lead to even more immigrants attempting to come here from there in the future, because his actions were intended to cause—and are causing—more destabilization in that country, and people tend to flee from unstable countries to protect their lives.

As for Venezuela, everyone who could escape did as their economy hit rock bottom. I was pretty tight with some Venezuelans in the 70s. They came from affluence but they all had food stamps vouchers and fake SS numbers that they purchased in PR on their way to the states. That is a fact too. They thought i was crazy to struggle as a student. But of course i didn’t qualify and i wouldn’t get a fake ID. Generally Venezuelans are wonderful people. I do not dispute that more ppl were crossing the border under Biden than are crossing now, but I do dispute the idea that some huge number of them belonged to drug cartels, or are rapists or murderers. We pay to keep them housed in detention in deplorable conditions and served barely edible food. If cost to get them their constitutional day in court is so prohibitive, then we should stop that for US citizens as well. That way everyone is treated exactly the same. See how ridiculous that is? If given their proper day in court, they would be processed more efficiently. But to keep detaining them for MONTHS on end before finally saying OK we are ready to send you out, thats a ton of money being spent for no reason. And there's a reason the higher ups are OK with THAT expense. Its a for profit system that they all own stock in. So every day, week, month that they keep these people detained they get richer. If it was really about speedy deportation, they wouldnt be holding them that long. They'd stamp the paper and send them out. But they arent doing that. Not to mention all the US citizens theyve grabbed with their tactics. I cant wait for their lawsuits. Especially the one where they raided a wrong address and froze their bank accounts, seized their cars, took all their phones and computers. Then turned around and said sorry about that you can apply to get all these things back and it will take at least a month but could take up to a year. Family with children unable to get to work or feed themselves with everything in their lives seized. We are spending MORE money doing things the wrong way and more to come as each of the lawsuits settle.

Actually, they do have an unconditional right to cross our borders at any point to seek asylum. Our immigration law was written that way back after WWII, bc the Congress at that time came to a bipartisan agreement that this country did not want to be the proximate cause of a genocide by refusing to allow ppl who were being tortured and killed in their homeland the opportunity to find a safe place to live. That part of the immigration code had never been amended. So anyone coming here to seek asylum, by definition has legal status until their case is heard and decided, even if they have no documentation.

The problem is that there are not enough legal avenues to immigrate, and yet the country—whether we like it or not—needs immigrants. The system, as it exists today, is governed by outdated and inadequate law; it is inefficient, insufficient, and inflexible.
My intent here is not to explain why in a few characters. That would be impossible—and that, in itself, is part of the problem. Immigration is difficult to explain to voters without making them feel cheated or misled. Most politicians simply play with the issue. Some don’t even understand it. Add to that the fact that immigration has always been, and remains, an emotionally charged topic in America, as it is almost everywhere in the world. I live 30 miles north of the border in AZ. There are large stretches in AZ where the border wall does not exist. Migrants from all over the world can cross freely and ask for asylum and border patrol agents regularly pick them up and bring them to Tucson.

Where is the Policy-relevant data, such as trends in innovative design & manufacture, workforce readiness for good paying jobs, quality of life for people over 85, and the like? I’d prefer evidence about the long term viability of the policy ideas underlying Biden’s big bills.
It is certainly obvious that he was trying to achieve those goals. Upgrading infrastructure and preparing for a future that will be dominated by global warming are certainly excellent goals.

Well, I’ve seen other numbers that looked quite different. I’m wondering about factcheck these days. I quit using that months ago. I do my own research.
I thought that too, it read like the usual spin.
We've been brainwashed to believe facts are spinned because of trump and MAGA lying every day. It's hard to believe anything factual or positive.
